Birkby's meet the Cabinet
In a change with tradition the Cabinet meeting started with presentations from what the No 10 Press Office describes as “two local businessmen”.
In an utterly surreal moment Ian Parker, Birkby's Chief Executive, and Richard Wright, Chairman Yorkshire and Humber Manufacturing Group, had the privilege of presenting to the full Cabinet (the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Chancellor, the Foreign Secretary and all 24 Secretaries of State) for 20 minutes on the issues facing business in Yorkshire and in Birkby's case the automotive component supply sector.
We had a very fair hearing and I believe the issues of access to funding, credit ratings/insurance and the fundamental point that if you want to have a viable UK car manufacturing industry, you have to have a viable UK component supply industry was noted.
